In February 2017, more than 30 countries will line up to compete in the World Shearing Champs in Invercargill’s ILT Stadium, Southland. Competitors from countries such as Mongolia, England, Switzerland, South Africa, and Japan have completed their entries and the New Zealand team was recently selected at the Canterbury A&P Show.
Organising committee chairman Tom Wilson said he was delighted with the number of teams entered to date, with more to come soon as team selections in various countries take place over the next few months.
About 4500 sheep will come through the stadium during the three days, and ILT Stadium Southland manager Nigel Skelt said the venue would be transformed into one of the world’s largest woolsheds. Stadium staff were already working on logistics for the event.
CP Wool are gold sponsors of the Shearing Champs and will be on site to support the event. CP Wool National Wool Manager, Simon Averill commented that ‘we will set up a trade display in the stadium as well as supplying approximately 20 fleeces for the display area. We are also providing all the judges shirts for the event which will be a great take-home item for them to remember their New Zealand experience.’
Tickets are selling fast for the 4 day event, but can be purchased online at www.worldshearingchamps.comDecember 12, 2016
